Full Turnkey Science Laboratory Project for Derby High School
Over the summer of 2024, Witley Jones partnered with Derby High School to deliver a full turnkey solution for the design and installation of two new science laboratories. This ambitious project involved the complete refurbishment of an existing lab and the transformation of a former catering kitchen into a fully functioning science teaching space.
The brief from the school was clear: both laboratories needed to be adaptable to accommodate all disciplines of science with flexibility at the heart of the design. With this in mind, we carefully approached the specification and layout to support a wide range of lessons, ensuring each space was safe, functional, and future-proof.
Converting a Catering Kitchen into a Science Laboratory
The most complex element of the project was the conversion of a disused catering kitchen. We began by removing all existing kitchen equipment and stripping the room back to a blank canvas. From there, significant structural work was undertaken, including the removal of internal walls and relaying of flooring to suit the new laboratory layout.
Although the space had previously been serviced for catering purposes, we needed to dig new trenches into the floor to install gas, water, and waste supplies — reconfiguring the services to meet the exact requirements of a science lab. To comply with building regulations and support a safe learning environment, we also installed a mechanical ventilation system to ensure effective airflow in and out of the space.
Refurbishing an Existing Laboratory
Alongside the conversion project, we refurbished one of the school’s existing science labs. This involved a complete strip-out of outdated furniture and fittings, making way for a refreshed, modern design. New worktops, benching, seating and storage solutions were installed, transforming the space into a bright, organised and practical environment.
As we have previously refurbished other science facilities across the school estate, we followed a consistent design scheme to maintain a unified look and feel. This helps create a familiar and professional setting for students and teaching staff alike. A key consideration in the refurbishment was the careful protection and reinstallation of an existing fume cupboard space which was seamlessly integrated into the final design.
A Seamless Turnkey Delivery
The result of this turnkey project is two high-quality science laboratories that support all areas of teaching science, increasing the capacity for the school and providing a modern learning environment for students.
We were delighted to deliver on time over the summer break so that the new facilities were ready for the start of the academic year.
