Bespoke Boarding School Furniture: Witley Jones Strengthens Long-Term Partnership with Shrewsbury School Through Major Accommodation Projects

Shrewsbury School boarding accommodation

Last summer, Witley Jones continued its long-standing collaboration with Shrewsbury School, delivering a comprehensive range of bespoke fitted furniture solutions across the school’s estate. The project included the design, manufacture, and installation of over 100 bespoke boarding accommodation bed sets, reinforcing a successful partnership that has spanned more than a decade.

With over 10 years of experience working alongside Shrewsbury School, Witley Jones was proud to support a significant modernisation and development programme. This initiative focused on enhancing both new and refurbished boarding facilities, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of pupils while maintaining high standards of comfort, functionality, and design.

Durable furniture construction is essential in boarding schools, balancing cost and longevity with aesthetic appeal. Bespoke furniture items are typically constructed from higher-quality materials like solid timber or high-density MFC to enhance durability.

Queen Elizabeth Hall: A New Era of Girls’ Boarding at Shrewsbury School

In response to growing demand and increased admissions, Shrewsbury School officially opened its fifth girls’ boarding house, Queen Elizabeth Hall, in September 2023. This state-of-the-art facility represents a key milestone in the school’s expansion.

Witley Jones played a central role in bringing this new boarding house to life by manufacturing and installing 60 bespoke bed sets. Designed to align with the school’s modern layout and aesthetic vision, the furniture helps create a welcoming, practical, and homely environment for students. Boarding school furniture must prioritise privacy and dignity, catering to the diverse needs of students for recreation, study, personal care, and social interaction.

The project required close collaboration with Pave Aways Ltd, the appointed contractors, to ensure the seamless integration of all bespoke fitted furniture within the new building. In addition to bed sets, Witley Jones also delivered:

  • Soft furnishings
  • Bench seating
  • Study room furniture
  • A custom-built 32-unit charging cabinet

Features such as secure locking systems and built-in safes can be incorporated during the design phase for improved functionality and safety.

These elements combined to enhance both the functionality and overall student experience within the accommodation. One-key locking systems, combination locks, or electronic safes can be integrated into bedroom furniture for enhanced security.

Bespoke Bed Sets Supporting Boarding House Upgrades

To meet specific requirements from the school, Witley Jones supplied an additional 30 bespoke bed sets for installation across various boarding houses undergoing upgrades. This demonstrated the company’s flexibility and ability to provide tailored furniture solutions for different spaces within the school.

Each bed set was thoughtfully designed to maximise usability and durability, comprising:

  • A metal-framed bed for easy movement
  • A wardrobe
  • A study desk and seating
  • Lockable storage
  • Pin boards and coat hooks

Effective boarding school furniture design includes features like higher storage beds with drawers and built-in shelving to maximise floor space and enhance functionality. Study Bunks are versatile units that combine a bed with a private study area below, often featuring integrated electrics and shelving. Pod Beds and Study Bunks maximise floor space by combining a bed, wardrobe, lockable storage, and desk into a single footprint. Fitted study desks can be built into specific alcoves, offering custom sizes and colour combinations. Desks and headboards may feature built-in LED reading lights and power sockets to eliminate trailing cables.

Further supporting refurbishment efforts, Witley Jones collaborated with Morris & Co during the upgrade of Ingram’s Hall, a boys’ boarding house, where they manufactured and installed more than 50 additional bed sets.

Day Boarding Lockers Enhance Storage and Organisation

As part of the summer works programme, Witley Jones also designed and manufactured 200 day boarding lockers. Storage units featuring one-key locking systems allow a single key to open all of a student’s lockable items.

The lockers were introduced to accommodate the growing number of day pupils, providing secure and accessible storage for personal belongings. Custom storage solutions can include made-to-measure bookcases and wardrobes designed for specific items such as musical instruments. This addition has contributed to a more organised, efficient, and student-friendly environment across the campus.

Delivering Quality and Efficiency

“We are thoroughly impressed with the exceptional quality of the bespoke furniture provided by Witley Jones. The ease of working with their team and the skilled installation within the project timeframe exceeded our expectations.

High-quality school furniture is designed to be robust and childproof, ensuring it can endure years of active learning environments. Additionally, furniture in schools should be easy to clean and maintain, which contributes to its longevity and functionality in busy educational settings.

Simon and his team provided a single point of contact throughout the project, ensuring seamless communication and coordination across a number of locations on the school estate. Their commitment to professionalism and efficiency was evident in the successful execution of the project.”

A Collaborative Partnership Focused on Excellence in Educational Spaces

Simon Downes, Managing Director of Witley Jones, expressed his pride in contributing to such prestigious developments at Shrewsbury School. Customisable furniture options for educational environments include a variety of styles, colours, and configurations to meet specific needs and preferences. He highlighted the importance of collaboration and the value of a long-term partnership in delivering high-quality, adaptable solutions. Custom pieces of furniture can also be finished in specific school colours or branding to reinforce institutional values and identity. Durable furniture is essential in educational settings as it must withstand heavy wear and tear from constant use by students and staff.

“We have worked very closely with the school to develop a range of furniture to suit their particular needs, a range that can be easily adapted to fit into any of their boarding houses, which offers the school ultimate flexibility. The outcome looks very impressive and offers all pupils a homely and practical living environment we are very proud to be involved in delivering our part of major projects across the whole of the school estate”.
