For more than six centuries, Winchester College has been shaped by tradition, craftsmanship, and a commitment to creating exceptional learning environments. When the College embarked on creating its first girls’ boarding provision in its 642-year history, it marked a defining moment, one that required a careful balance of heritage, innovation, and thoughtful design.
Witley Jones was appointed to deliver the furniture supply and installation package across the new boarding facilities, helping to create spaces that were both welcoming and practical for a new generation of pupils. From the outset, Witley Jones worked closely with the College steering committee, Mark Hellawell of Rokwell, and Bidwells representatives Lisa and James to develop furniture styles, specifications, and solutions that reflected the College’s unique character while meeting the demands of modern boarding life.
The project represented far more than a furniture installation. It was about creating comfortable, functional environments where pupils could live, study, and socialise, while ensuring the furniture complemented the historic setting of one of the country’s most prestigious educational institutions.
Witley Jones supplied and installed furniture throughout the new boarding accommodation, providing solutions for 30 double rooms, 58 single rooms, two relief matron’s rooms, and two accessible rooms. The works also included eight pupil brew rooms, dining furniture for two house kitchens, seven offices for housemistresses, matrons, and tutors, library furniture, and fully furnished living spaces complete with soft furnishings.
Alongside the residential areas, Witley Jones delivered furniture for shared spaces designed to support the wider boarding experience. This included eight cloister study areas, solid oak table and bench sets for the main dining hall, as well as lockers and mesh cages for changing room facilities. Every element was carefully considered to provide durability, comfort, and a consistent design approach throughout the accommodation.
The works also extended into existing College buildings, including Chambers Court, the oldest boarding house at Winchester College, where Witley Jones contributed to the continued enhancement of the historic boarding environment. The team also returned to Moberley’s House, replacing furniture originally supplied by Witley Jones approximately 16 years earlier as part of the College’s ongoing investment and refurbishment programme.
Working within a historic environment requires sensitivity, precision, and an understanding of how spaces will be used for generations to come. Witley Jones’ involvement from the earliest stages ensured that the furniture package was carefully tailored to the College’s requirements, combining traditional quality with modern functionality.
This landmark project has supported a significant moment in Winchester College’s history, creating exceptional boarding spaces that respect the past while preparing the College for the future.
“Working with Witley Jones on the Winchester College portfolio has been a pleasure. They have successfully risen to every challenge, delivering high-quality products that balance longevity with the level of style expected in such a prestigious setting.”
Mark Hellawell, Director, Rokwell
