Alongside FSC® and PEFC certification, we also recognise the importance of EUDR (EU Deforestation Regulation) compliance, particularly for European-sourced timber products. EUDR helps ensure that timber products placed on the European market are sourced from land that has not been subject to deforestation, providing an additional layer of assurance around responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.

Our production facilities are designed to minimise waste wherever possible. Timber offcuts generated during manufacturing are collected rather than discarded and are reused as fuel within our biomass heating system. The renewable heat generated not only warms our factory and offices but also provides process heat for our spray shop drying rooms. This allows us to carefully control temperatures throughout the drying process, ensuring sprayed products dry evenly and consistently, resulting in a higher-quality finish while making efficient use of renewable energy.
This significantly reduces waste while lowering our dependence on conventional heating sources.
We also carefully select materials with sustainability in mind. For example, chipboard can be recycled several times throughout its lifespan, making it a more environmentally responsible option than many people realise.
Looking ahead, Witley Jones is also exploring new recycling initiatives with suppliers to help schools responsibly recycle furniture at the end of its life, supporting the principles of the circular economy.

Recognising the importance of safeguarding students, teachers and our own workforce, Witley Jones became one of the first school furniture manufacturers to adopt formaldehyde-free lacquer across our veneered furniture range.
Our commitment to healthier furniture began during the development of these coatings, when Witley Jones worked alongside AkzoNobel as one of its trial manufacturing partners to develop and test formaldehyde-free lacquer systems. This early collaboration enabled us to help refine the technology before its wider introduction to the market.
We now use AkzoNobel’s Duracid FF coating system as standard because it provides the same exceptional durability required for busy educational settings without introducing harmful chemicals.
