Smarter Spaces, Better Learning: Revolutionising challenging School Environments with Custom Furniture

Westminster Classroom 136

Every school estate comes with its own quirks; tight classrooms, awkward layouts, multi-purpose areas, or outdated infrastructure. These challenges can often limit how effectively teachers teach and how students learn. But with thoughtful, bespoke furniture design, even the most complex spaces can be transformed into highly functional, inspiring environments.

That’s where Witley Jones excels. By combining creativity, craftsmanship, and close collaboration with schools, they consistently turn spatial challenges into opportunities. From innovative teaching walls to carefully planned music storage, dynamic libraries, and flexible learning resource centres, our approach proves that great design doesn’t just fit a space, it enhances it.

Teaching Walls: Creating Order, Flexibility, and Focus

One of the most common challenges schools face is integrating storage, display, and technology into already limited classroom space. Traditional layouts often result in clutter, disconnected teaching tools, and a lack of a clear focal point.

Witley Jones’ bespoke teaching walls solve this by bringing everything together into one streamlined solution.

At Phoenix Collegiate, this challenge was amplified by scale. The school needed to modernise over 100 classrooms while working within tight deadlines and varied room layouts. Witley Jones designed 110 bespoke teaching walls, adapting each one to suit different environments, from standard classrooms to science labs and drama studios.

The creativity shone in the details:

  • Smaller teaching walls were developed for rooms with fixed benches.
  • Ventilated panels and access points were integrated where radiators affected layout.
  • Custom heights and configurations ensured every wall maximised available space.

The result? Classrooms that felt larger, more organised, and far more adaptable for different teaching styles.

At The Hall School in London, the challenge was quite different: irregular ceiling heights in basement classrooms. Instead of forcing a standard solution, each teaching wall was subtly adjusted in height while maintaining a consistent aesthetic. Some even incorporated teacher desks within the unit, saving valuable floor space.

Meanwhile, at Hollymount School, teaching walls helped bridge the gap between traditional and modern teaching methods, allowing teachers to seamlessly switch between whiteboards and interactive technology, supporting a more engaging, flexible learning experience.
Across all these examples, one thing is clear: teaching walls don’t just save space, they redefine how classrooms function.

Music Storage: Protecting Instruments, Supporting Creativity

Music departments often struggle with safe, organised, and accessible storage. Instruments are valuable, vary in size, and are frequently used, making poor storage both a logistical headache and a risk to the equipment.

At Wycombe Abbey’s Goodland Music School, Witley Jones tackled this head-on during a full refurbishment of the space. The goal was to create an environment that matched the school’s commitment to musical excellence.

Our solution included:

  • Bespoke lockers and pigeonholes tailored to different instrument sizes
  • Purpose-designed furniture for music technology spaces
  • A layout that ensured easy access without clutter

By designing storage around the needs of both students and staff, we created a space where lessons flow more smoothly, instruments are protected, and creativity can thrive without disruption.

Library Areas: Balancing Comfort, Collaboration, and Flexibility

Designing a library space isn’t just about shelving books; it’s about creating an environment that supports reading, collaboration, and independent learning, often within unconventional or repurposed spaces.

At Holme Grange School’s Eaton Grange building, Witley Jones was given the freedom to design a state-of-the-art library from the ground up.

Our approach focused on:

  • A mix of individual and group tables to support different learning styles
  • Durable yet visually appealing finishes
  • A layout that encourages both quiet study and collaboration

In contrast, The Blue Coat School in Birmingham presented a different challenge: transforming an unused room into a vibrant library. Witley Jones reimagined the entire space with:

  • Wall-to-wall bookcases fitted precisely around sockets and dimensions
  • A curved bookcase to break up linear layouts
  • Soft seating built into window reveals, maximising every inch of space

Even more creatively, at King’s Hawford, we converted a double-decker bus into a fully functioning library. Working within the constraints of a vehicle, they designed bespoke seating, shelving, and tables that stayed true to the bus’s character while creating a magical reading environment for pupils.

These projects highlight how thoughtful furniture design can bring even the most unusual spaces to life.

Learning Resource Centres: Designing for Multi-Purpose Use

Modern schools increasingly rely on Learning Resource Centres (LRCs), spaces that combine libraries, IT suites, study zones, and social areas. The challenge lies in making these multi-functional environments feel cohesive, organised, and easy to use.

Witley Jones approaches LRC design with a focus on flexibility and intelligent space planning.

Key solutions include:

  • Moveable desks and modular layouts that adapt to group or individual work
  • Integrated technology storage and cable management to improve safety
  • Soft seating and breakout areas for informal study and relaxation
  • Zoned layouts, including quiet nooks for focused work and open areas for collaboration

By carefully balancing these elements, schools can create spaces that support independent study, group learning, and social interaction, all within a single, efficient footprint.

Importantly, our designs also consider how students actually use the space, ensuring it feels comfortable, intuitive, and somewhere they want to spend time.

A Partner in Problem-Solving

What truly sets Witley Jones apart is not just the quality of our furniture, but our approach to collaboration and problem-solving.

Across every project, we:

  • Work closely with schools to understand challenges and goals
  • Adapt designs to suit small rooms, irregular layouts, and multi-use spaces
  • Remain flexible during installation, even making adjustments on-site
  • Deliver solutions that are both practical and visually impactful

From fitting teaching walls during term time at Phoenix Collegiate to revisiting designs at The Blue Coat School to ensure every detail was right, we believe that our commitment to getting it right is evident.
